Company Has Set the Goal of the Year: What Now? (Employee's Perspective)

Every year, employees hear about the company’s vision and annual goals, often during grand kickoff meetings. These goals may sound inspiring, but for many, they quickly become abstract. Daily work takes over, with operational challenges shifting priorities and piling up tasks. This disconnect leaves employees wondering: how do their efforts contribute to the bigger picture? Without clear alignment, it’s easy to feel like cogs in a machine, far removed from the organization’s broader ambitions.

Studies support this widespread issue. A 2023 survey by Gallup revealed that globally, only 41% of employees strongly agree they understand how their roles align with their company’s goals Gallup. (2024). State of the global workplace, 2024. Closer to home, in Southeast Asia, research by Mercer showed that over 60% of employees in SMEs felt disengaged because of unclear communication about organizational objectives. The gap is especially stark in fast-paced environments, where shifting operational priorities further blur the connection between individual tasks and strategic aims.

What's Often Missing: Consistent, Active Communication.

Effective communication is essential for bridging the gap between individual tasks and company goals. Without it, employees may struggle to see how their work fits into the bigger picture. Here are some strategies to improve communication and ensure alignment:

  • Hold Regular Team-Level Updates: Reinforce company goals and clarify individual roles through consistent, structured updates.

  • Use Feedback Loops: Actively seek input from employees and address concerns in real-time to ensure alignment and address challenges promptly.

  • Encourage Collaborative Goal-Setting: Organize goal-setting sessions where individuals and teams can align their objectives with the broader company vision.

  • Implement Cross-Departmental Workshops: Facilitate workshops that foster a broader understanding of how different departments contribute to the company’s vision.

  • Utilize Technology Tools: Leverage dashboards or shared goal trackers like Teamflect to maintain transparency, allowing everyone to track progress and stay informed.

  • Empower Managers as Communicators: Equip managers with the responsibility to communicate the company’s goals clearly and provide ongoing support to their teams.

By integrating these strategies into daily operations, companies can ensure that employees remain connected to the organization's broader objectives.
